Alappuzha

Overview

Built in the 9th century AD, Alleppey, called Alappuzha lies on the edge of the great Ashtamudi Lake. Alleppey is a town  situated south of Kochi. It is also known as the Venice of the east due to many waterways that inter connects different parts of this town.  Alleppey is an important tourist attraction in Kerala and there are Kerala Tour Packages to Alleppey. After reaching Alleppey  it is possible to see the backwaters of Kerala, which are one of the most important tourist attractions here. On the western side of Alleppey is the Arabian sea and on the eastern side is the backwaters. Today, Alleppey has emerged as a Backwater Tourist Centre, beckoning thousands of foreign tourists each year. Every year, during August-September, Alleppey wakes up to the pulsating Nehru Cup Snake Boat Race, a water sport unique to Kerala.

Attractions and Places to Visit

Alappuzha Beach

This beach is situated very close to Alleppey railway station and on the western part of Alleppey town.  Tourists who come to see the backwaters also spend some time at the beach. It is an ideal place for spending the evening and for watching sunset.

Kuttanad

It is also known as the rice bowl of Kerala because of the extensive paddy fields in the area. Most of the area is below sea level.  Travelling in a houseboat it is possible to see these paddy fields with coconut trees in the boundary.  The paddy fields combined with coconut trees add to the scenic beauty of this place.

This beach is situated 11km north of Alleppey. Many coconut trees close to beach add to the beauty of this place. There are also many beach side resorts at Mararikkulam which are ideal place for spending vacation. This beach is also suitable for resting in a hammock below coconut trees.
