Overview

Rishikesh is a small town and a municipal board in Dehradun district in the northern state of Uttarakhand in India. Scenically located where the Holy GangesRiver comes down from the Himalayas.

Rishikesh, also spelled Hrishikesh, Rushikesh or Hrushikesh.

Rishikesh catapulted to Western fame when the Beatles dropped by for a visit to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Ashram. Rishikesh is associated with Lord Rama and Laxman.

The town of Rishikesh lies in the foothills of the Himalayas of the Garhwal region. It is the gateway to the upper Garhwal region and the starting point for the Char Dham pilgrimage (Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath) and an ideal destination not only for pilgrims but also for the people who are interested in adventure, medtation, yoga and other aspects of Hinduism.

Rishikesh is also a Gateway to the World Heritage site Valley of Flowers National Park - The 8th Wonder of the World & Char Dham Yatra

Rishikesh, also known as the “Place of Sagas” is a spiritual town situated 24 kms upstream from Haridwar, at the confluence of the Chandrabhaga and Ganga and surrounded by scenic beauty of the hills on three sides. The whole place is considered to be sacred as it is believed that meditation at this place leads to attainment of salvation. There are many temples-some ancient, some new along the river Ganges. The River side is dotted by the ashrams of Sadhus and Sages. Rishikesh represents the site where Vishnu vanquished the demon Madhu. 

Rishikesh as appering the Adventure Capital of India for the adventure seekers as Rishikesh is the suggested place for starting their trekking expeditions to the Himalayan Peaks and for the White River Rafting. Also, International Yoga week which attracts participation from across the world, is held here, every year, in February on the banks of the holy Ganga.

Rishikesh is a vegetarian city by law, as well as an alcohol-free city. Rishikesh has also banned use of plastics bags by shopkeepers and vendors.

Attractions and Places to Visit

LakshNman Jhula

Believed to have completed in 1929, the Laxman Jhula is a popular hanging bridge situated 70 feet above the River Ganga and 450 feet long. The bridge connects two villages, Tapovan and Jonk, crossing the river from west to east. Lakshman Jhula acts as an adjoining bridge across River Ganga, along the old route to the sacred shrines of Badrinath and Kedarnath. The construction of various grand temples around the Jhula has made it one of the most visited places in Rishikesh.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is dedicated to Shiva as Neelkanth is his another name. This temple is located around 7km from Swarg Ashram and the route is a 3 hour long walk along a forest path.

Triveni Ghat

Triveni Ghat is a confluence of three holy significant rivers of India, namely, the Ganges, the Yamuna and the Saraswathi. It is one of the most revered sacred bathing spots in Rishikesh, situated on the banks of the Ganges river. It is a sacred belief amongst the locals that all those who take a dip in Triveni Ghat will have a relief from all the sins carried out in their lifteime, as the water here has the power to purify them.
