Overview

Wayanad district,in the north-east of Kerala,India is formed on November 1,1980 as the 12th district ,carved out of Kozhikode and Kannur district.The name Wayanad is derived from "Wayalnadu" means land of paddy fields.The picturesque plateau,having the largest concentration of tribal population in the state,was once known as Africa in Kerala.Kalpetta,the only municipal town in the district,is district headquarters.It is famous for lush forests,splashing waterfalls,tea and coffee plantations.The whole district has a number of hotels and resorts that cater to the tourists who flock here to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.Places of interest are,Pookode lake,Soochipara waterfalls,and Kuruva islands.The nearest airport at Kozhikode,which is 100 km away;the nearest railhead is Kozhikode and an excellent road network connects it to the other cities.
